"Can You Hear Me Now?"

"Can You Hear Me Now?" by Sherry Turkle: Whether or not we agree with Turkle's assessment of the problems with technology, I think she raises some important issues and questions that we need to ask ourselves as we move ahead. What are some of the most significant questions that you think have been raised as we've discussed articles this semester? Have your ideas or habits changed as a result?

  1. I think that one question would be, is the use of technology caused more harm than it has good, or is the problem with teenagers and electronics becoming more of an issue that needs some serious attention? I feel like that my habits have not changed as a result of discussing these articles, but it did cause me to look at myself and see if there was anything that applied to me.

  2. In her article, Turkle asks, "Are we leaving enough time to take our time on the tings that matter?" Do we, like Hermione Granger, need to sort out our priorities? What is truly important to us, technology or human interaction?

    1. I think we do need to sort out our priorities! What is most important is human interaction, that's how people grow closer together and learn how to communicate and have relationships. Technology is very beneficial and I am so grateful for it, but I think we just need to be careful how much time we spend on it because we can miss real life experiences if we are constantly glued to our phones or computers.

    1. I know a lot of people who really would choose the "comfort" of technology above human interaction. It is really hard to see, they become isolated in a way that keeps them from making and keeping true friends. I never want to end up that way, no form of technology can replace a real person being a friend to me.

  4. The articles that I have read has caused me to look at how technology has affected my life. One question that has come to mind is whether or not people should limit they use of technology. Furthermore, I question whether technology is causing too many distractions that cause more harm than good. So far my habits in using technology has not been effected by the readings I have done about technology. However, reading about the effects of technology has caused me to re-evaluate how I perceive technology, and has reinforced some of my beliefs on how technology effects people.

  5. One of the most significant questions that has been raised on these articles is that we would rather have the "easy" way out and technology has supposedly done that because we would rather be on our devices than to take care of the task at hand. One thing that Turkle said she hates, is when people ignore her and are on their devices. After reading all these articles about technology, it has made me realize that I don't think anyone knows how much is too much and we need to limit ourselves to how much time we spend with technology and to take care of the most important stuff first.

  6. If you have kids, how far are you willing to go with the kinds of electronics they are allowed to possess or use?

    1. I don't have kids yet, but I would love for them to use one of those new programs where the babies learn to read. As they grow up I would try to limit their technology use. I would do this by going outside with them more. I would play games with them as a family.

  7. This is a great thing to think about. I would want my kids to use all sorts of new technology that will undoubtedly be developed during their childhood. At the same time, I would want to set apart time for them to specifically not use these devices and enjoy other things, like the outdoors.

  8. How come hanging out with friends or family is almost always more enjoyable in person than through technology?

  9. It's been interesting to read these articles and get a deeper look into how technology impact us. I think for the most part, technology has been a positive aspect of modern society. Even though there are some negatives, it has made our lives more convenient and has brought us closer. My technology habits haven't really changed since discussing the articles, but I am aware of how technology affects me.
