"What's the Matter With Kids Today?"

Here is the post for your comments on Amy Goldwasser's "What's the Matter With Kids Today?"

We tend to focus sometimes on the negative effects of technology on kids. What are some positive uses of technology that teens (or young adults) engage in?

And on the other side of the issue, are there negative aspects to these positive uses?

  1. Amy Goldwasser's "What's the Matter With Kids Today?" was perhaps one of the articles that actually said good things about technology. Technology has engaged teens to read and write 16.7 hours a week. Teens are being connective, collaborative, and are writing about themselves. As well as being fluent in texting, e-mailing, blogging, IM’ing.

  2. There are a lot of good uses that the internet as to offer, but also a bit of negative uses as well. Teenagers today are more tech savvy than previous generations, because they are living in a society where one needs to use technology to get things done. Even though the internet has many uses we need to be careful about how we use it, and how teenagers use it. Spending too much time using it as a form of entertainment for hours on end is one thing that wee need to be careful about, even if it is a nice thing to get to access to that kind of content easily.

  3. I really enjoyed this article. I thought it was a refreshing, positive look at young adults today. We constantly hear so much about the low intellect and knowledge of today's youth. Very rarely is there an open, relaxed look at the benefits of technology on their lives and minds. Nevertheless, I do see a great benefit from stepping away from our phones and computers and just taking a breath once in a while.

  4. This article of Amy Goldwasser's was a really good article because it changed the focus on how technology was a good turning point. She also made some good points on how the youth or the younger adults are using the internet, their phones and other technology.

  5. Do you think the internet is being filled with more useful, or harmful material today? And how do you see the use of the internet in the future?

    1. I think that the internet defiantly has good uses and bad uses. My point to be made about this article isn't necessarily that all use of the internet is bad, it is that people, kids especially, do not use them in the best of ways. Yes the internet has a lot of educational material on it, but kids are not going to spend the time they have on the internet, looking up history or reading scientific articles, they are going to be playing games and watching odd music videos like "What does the Fox Say?"

  6. This article is one of my favorites. I really liked Goldwasser's point of view on teenagers and technology. I loved reading about how technology is engaging people to read and write more. On Facebook I've noticed there are a lot of articles that get passed around which is encouraging people to read. Also, people write a lot on Facebook. Not just about their lives but when they want to express their opinion on things or be creative and make up a poem or something.

  7. A positive aspect of technology when it comes to teenagers is the fact that information is so readily available to them. It has become a habit that when they have a question, they get on a computer, smart phone, or tablet and look up the answer. They are instantly given responses. It's good that teens can so easily and rapidly expand their knowledge. A drawback to this, however, is that the internet is also full of misinformation and strong opinions. As long as they can distinguish what is credible information, they are expanding their knowledge on a frequent basis.
