"A Portfolio of Print Advertisements"

Take a look at each of these print advertisements and be prepared to talk about them in class on Friday. What is the advertisement trying to sell? What kinds of tactics do they use to make their product look appealing?

  1. I think the one that says, "More Doctors Smoke Camel Than Any Other Cigarette" is so funny. Doctors are supposed to know everything about health, but they smoke cigarettes. However, back in that time everyone used to smoke. Even pregnant ladies.

    1. I thought that one was funny as well. One I really thought was funny was the Ford one. It represented women to be so pathetic. I am glad women today are represented as strong individuals.

Do you think these adds are different from the adds we have today?

    1. I think they are only different in the aspect that the products and time have changed but the same techniques are still in use today because they work. When you see car commercials on T.V today they are still talking about how great it looks and how easy it is to drive, they may not be demeaning women nowadays but the same techniques are in use.

    2. I do think that advertisement are different today compared to the past. I believe that advertisement reflect the times they are created. As the world changes advertisements do as well. But the core idea of advertisements is to sell peoples something, and they change reflecting the people of the time of whom they selling it to.

  3. I think the biggest thing in most the advertisements is sex. All the men and women are attractive. They are made to look so perfect so that makes people want to be like them naturally. But we have to realize that is isn't realistic.

Do you think that generations after us will look back on our ads and think the same thing that we think about these old ads? What do you think they will find funny and bizarre?

    1. I agree with you about the sex part. I do see expensive brands like Armani and Victoria Secret always wanting to have this image, that by wearing their product you could appeal in such way as in sexy. In some cases the ads do succeed, and we still in counter it a lot.

    2. I think clothing stores such as American Eagle and Hollister use sex appeal the most. If you notice, all of their commercials and advertisements only have the best looking people. Hollister and Abercrombie have big black and white pictures of attractive women with perfect figures and men with washboard abs all over their store. I think it's a way of getting people into the store and also sort of putting a label on their clothing that "only attractive people wear our clothes".

  4. In general, i think current advertisments are much less wordy. Many print ads contain only one carefully designed sentence, as compared with the almost article-styled advertisements from the past.

  5. I thought it was interesting to see Hemmingway make an appearance in one of these advertisments. It is also sad and just a bit funny that he is advertising Ale, because he was an alcoholic.

  6. I think that the "more doctors smoke camel than any other cigarettes" ad is so fascinating to me. To think that that was the mind set back before medical advances is amazing. To use an example such as a doctor, who smoke a certain type of cigarette, really adds the feeling of trust in a product. People trust doctors with the most important thing to them, their lives. So when this ad uses a doctor it adds trust to the product.

  7. I think that advertisements back then, were much more compelling. However, they were very misleading (Camel Adds) but i think that because adds are something we now seem to ignore, because they are so abundant, they seem dull. I would be much more likely to buy a product with a claim such as these, then i would today.

  8. In class, I was handed the Solo Flex add. Which one did you have in class? Did you think it was effective? Why or why not?
