"Advertising's Fifteen Basic Appeals" by Jib Fowles

Here is the link to Jib Fowles' article, "Advertising's Fifteen Basic Appeals." This article is quite old, but the appeals still apply to advertisements today. Can you think of one or two ads that correspond with one or two of the appeals listed in this article? Share the ads by linking to a Youtube video, if possible.

  1. Which appeals do you think are used more often? Do you think there is a difference in the way things are advertised today than they were before?

    1. I think the main appeal used in our society now is the appeal of sex. Compared the ads that use this appeal in the fifties, today's ads don't hold anything back when they use this appeal. There are girls eating the new Carl's Jr. burger on the beach in a little bikini and a girl getting the back of her bikini cut to advertise for the new convertible fiat. This appeal is used the most in today's advertisements.

    2. I think physiological appeals are used most often because it's easy to appeal to people's basic needs. There are many fast food and soda commercials out there. We don't need to eat fast food, but getting that need fulfilled so conveniently is satisfying. I think advertising is just as effective now as it was in the past. Advertising changes as we change.

  2. I think Allstate commercials are really effective! They do a great job of promoting the appeal of guidance, and feeling safe. Because they are funny and promote these appeals, I remember them above other insurance commercials. Here's one of their commercials that I think is really funny:

  3. Do you think there is a certain appeal that almost all commercials use that benefits them?

    1. I think most commercials just try to convince the buyer that their product will make their life better. The appeals just help to convince the buyer of this. I mean who doesn't like beautiful women and large juicy cheeseburgers?...
