"Selling Happiness: Two Pitches From Mad Men"

The following links will take you to YouTube clips of the popular AMC series, Mad Men.

The first clip   is from the very first episode of the series, and shows Don Draper making a pitch for Lucky Strike Cigarettes: "Mad Men: It's Toasted."

The second shows a pitch for the Kodak Carousel: "Mad Men: Carousel."

As you watch the clips, consider how the use of a single word, or the choice of one word over another, can increase the persuasive appeal of an advertisement.

  1. Do you think the real reason for the Hostess comeback was nostalgia? Why or why not?

    1. I think some people may have responded as it would have been nostalgia. A lot of people grew up with Twinkies, and when people found out they would be gone they bought them even if they may have not had one in years. After not being able to have them and now that they are back, people may have realized the meaning of the Twinkie in their past. \

  2. Defiantly!!! by choosing different words it makes a person feel a different emotion. Like how he used carousel instead of wheel, it just has a stronger meaning behind it.

    1. I don't know if it's the advertising or the product itself, but every time I watch a Coke commercial, I've got to have one.

    2. I feel like food commercials do I really great job of advertising. They make the food look SO good! When I'm watching a commercial for say Carl's Junior, and they show people eating this big juicy burger, I start craving one! I don't even like Carl's Junior all that much but I still want to eat a burger from their place when I see their commercials.

  5. A popular saying goes something like this, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me." Do you think this is true? Or do you think that words have the power to create lasting influences?
