"Video Games and Aggression" by Viet Nguyen

In this article, Nguyen suggests that research attempting to show a direct link between video games and aggression has been biased or inconclusive. What are your thoughts on this? Do you have any first-hand experience that might show a connection?

  1. I agree with Nguyen. I think a lot of people just use video games as an excuse for people to be violent and blame the video games. I think that those kind of studies would be helpful.
How would the studies be measured? What would be considered aggression and how would they test it?

  2. I play video games myself and violent ones like all of the Grand Theft Auto games and I don't consider myself an aggressive person. Do most the studies just focus on males? and do the studies vary on females?

  3. Kasandra! I was going to do my final paper on this but found that almost all the studies focus on males! Which i agree could be totally bias. - Kenzie Krause

  4. I think violent video games make people less sensitive. Seeing violent behavior constantly makes people think it's normal. They soon start believing that some violent actions aren't so bad and to me that's scary! I don't play violent video games and I've noticed a difference between me and my friends who do. When we were watching the Hunger Games I was having a hard time watching people get killed while my friends who play violent video games had no problem watching it.

  5. I agree with Natasha, Video games deafen our senses to what is real, and what is not. More than that even, i think it makes it hard to define what is moral and immoral. I think you can also relate this to violent TV shows and movies however, so i dont think that video games should get all the blame.

  6. Do you think that video games should get all of the blame? or is it just the media and entertainment industry in general?

    1. I don't think that video games alone could cause someone to be violent. Nyugen mentions some school shootings and i read a book about the Columbine shooting. it was interesting because i don't remember the book at all mentioning that the killers did what they did because of video games. they were mentally unstable. yes, they probably played video games... but it definitely wasnt the cause for their violent behavior.

  7. This article argues that violence and games are not connected, but has anyone experienced that video games have caused them to act out violently? Or do you have any friends that have acted out violently from playing video games?

    1. That's true but I think it has more to do with the persons personality and behavior more than the games. I know people who get mad over mario kart and that wouldn't be classified as a violent video game I would think.

  8. I think that it has something to do with the kid and the way they are raised. If they know right from wrong then they would not let the video game get the best of them and take it out in violence. I grew up knowing this kids who was about 6 years older than me, he was playing a violent video game with shooting and killing people with a close friend and he beat his friend, his friend lashed out and stabbed him 88 times. I think that it can cause some people to use violent acts and use aggression towards people.

  9. I dont think violent video games directly cause aggressive behavior, tons of people play grand theft auto and call of duty and are perfectly nice people. I think aggressive behavior comes from multiple different factors not just video games.

  10. I think that video games can definitely cause aggression but not in the way many people have argued that they do. When I was younger I would always let my competitive side get the better of me when I was losing and I would become aggressive. The main difference here is that it wouldn't matter what kind of video game I was playing. I think aggression isn't caused by video games, but rather that they can just bring out our natural tendencies.
